My dad ain\u2019t just the letter writin\u2019 kind \u2013
\nHe\u2019s rather let the women see to that;
\nHe\u2019s got a mess o\u2019 troubles on his mind,
\nAnd likes to keep \u2018em underneath his hat.<\/p>\n

And p\u2019raps because he isn\u2019t very strong
\nOn talkin\u2019, why, he\u2019s kind o\u2019 weak on ink;
\nBut he can work like sin the whole year long,
\nAnd, crickey, how that dad o\u2019 mine can think!<\/p>\n

When I set out from Homeville last July,
\nHe didn\u2019t bawl the way my sister did;
\nHe just shook hands and says, \u201cWell, boy, good-bye.”
\n(He\u2019s got his feelin\u2019s, but he keeps \u2018em hid.)<\/p>\n

And so when mother writes about the things
\nThat I spend half my time a-thinkin\u2019 of,
\nThere\u2019s one short line that every letter brings;
\n\u201cFather will write, and meanwhile sends his love.\u201d
\n\u201cFather will write,\u201d Well, some day p\u2019raps he will \u2013
\nThere\u2019s lots of funny prophecies come true;
\nBut if he just keeps promisin\u2019 to, still,
\nI\u2019ll understand, and dad\u2019ll know I do.<\/p>\n
